Hecate
She ached all over, dirt and dust from their travels through the desert seemed to cover every inch of her, alongside the bruises that had been inflicted by her travelling partner. Hecate puffed out an exhausted breath as she trailed after her brother, perhaps he was taking her to her death, which frankly would be welcomed by now. They had been travelling for over two months now, and she had been his only constant punching bag, and boy was she feeling it now. The painted filly opened her mouth again, hesitating and trembling as she tried to glean an inkling of his mood before she spoke. "Hades, please..." She began, voice hoarse and strained from dehyrdration and the innate fear of her twin. When he didn't respond to her, she felt confident enough to continue. "Ther river back there, the one we passed a short while ago, could we not rest there for a short while before continuing on?" Her words were carefully measured, though her tone was timid and shy, she was tensed to flinch away should he suddenly whirl around and lunge for her, like he had on many an occasion.
Her brother merely flicked one ear dismissively, "No." Came the sharp, short response that sent a shiver down her spine, and she swallowed the defiant response that rose up in her mind. "Keep up. Final warning, Hecate." Hades added on, a growl in his tone that brooked no argument and warned her of an oncoming storm. Panic rose in Hecate's chest and she nodded, "Yes, Hades." She replied automatically, picking up her pace until she walked just to his right, her head behind his shoulder. Unfortunately this now meant she was in striking distance, the tobiano mare stamped down her rising anxiety and vowed to remain silent unless Hades spoke directly to her, she didn't need any more bruises or bites to add to her marks.
Hades
Hecate had been doing his head in ever since they'd left their homelands with her constant whining, crying and shrieking. Spirits above, if they'd been home he would've given her a good beating and left it at that. But unfortunately because they didn't have a safe enough place for her to recuperate, he could only inflict a certain amount before it became too life-threatening. This whole situation just made him more angry, it was her fault they were in this mess anyway. If she hadn't been dumb enough to fall for the first face that came along (who wasn't even that good-looking anyway), he wouldn't have had to kill him, and then they wouldn't have been cast out! He grumbled to himself internally, ears tilted back and face in a near-permenant state of fury. He could tell she was tiring now, hearing her slowly falling back the more they walked on the soft, giving sand and the more the sun beat down on their backs.
Hades was satisfied at that, even if he was tired too, he'd push Hecate until she begged to stop, it was only a matter of time. Just as he was surveying the desert for a possible resting point in the near future, he heard his twin speak and although he didn't give her any reaction, a cruel smirk curled up the side of his maw and that warmth of satifaction curled around his blackened heart. He almost laughed at her question, he had known she was close to cracking, but not that close. Fortunately for him, he could go on for another hour or so, and by that point, she'd truly be begging. "No." he snapped out, pinning his ears this time and flicking his tail to show his annoyance. Of course really, he was playing with her, of course she frustrated him to his breaking point more than once, but... well, this time he was having far to much fun to be truly enraged.
The roan youngster realised she was falling behind even more and growled out another order, frankly it was the only way to actually get her to do anything. "Keep up. Final warning, Hecate." He ground out, readying himself to spin and lunge for her at a moment's notice if she decided to be disobedient. To his immense pleasure, she immediately complied, her reply was swift and her catch up was quicker. His inner monster purred smugly, she was getting there. Only a two weeks ago he would've had to give her a quick lesson about respect as she wouldn't have answered him properly. But now... now this was progress. Hecate had a lot of potential, she just needed a hoof to reach it fully.
Hades & Hecate
The duo rambled on for another hour before Hecate stumbled, earning a sharp nip to her neck from Hades, the painted filly squealed as his teeth made hard contact. Her flinch carried her away a step, just out of his reach and she stopped, lowering her head submissively, silently watching him out of the corner of her eye as he decided if he wanted to bully her any more. The roan decided against it, dismissively turning back on their path, the silent reprimand hanging in the air, another warning not to mess up. The black tobiano moved to quickly catch up, this time staying a slightly safer distance away, though she knew trying to run from Hades' punishments was a mistake. It never worked anyway, he had their father's thoroughbred long legs and graceful stride, whereas she was nearly a mirror image of their mother, stocky, thick and unmistakeably gypsy vanner. It had meant, since birth, that she couldn't out run him, she could only hope to outsmart him, or appeal to his shallow nature and distract him whenever the oppurtunity presented itself. Hades was beginning to feel the thirst by now, and Hecate had felt as though she'd eaten sand, but she knew she had to wait for the right moment to ask again, otherwise it would end up being far worse than a nip.
The roan colt glanced over his shoulder and glared at his sister, he was about open his mouth and berate her for being useless when the sound of rustling leaves caught his attention. Hecate had shrunken into herself by this point, tense and trembling as she awaited the enslaught that never came, instead she watched, confused, as Hades suddenly changed course, shoving past her and striding toward a particularly tall dune she hadn't really noticed. Hecate chewed her lip anxiously, watching him before suddenly realising if he realised she wasn't with him, she would suffer greatly for it. She caught up to him again, quickly, and the pair made slow but steady progress up the dune side. By the time they reached its peak, the sun was bearing down directly overhead, hurting their eyes and heating them both until they were slick with sweat. The tobiano filly panted a little as she caught her breath at the top, Hades merely sneered at her, hiding his own discomfort at being in such an unpleasant place before jerking his head to the sight before them. Hecate turned her attention to where he was motioning and her mouth suddenly felt even more dry, if that was possible.
Before the twins, lay a beautiful, silent oasis. The palms that crowded the water's edge swayed gently in the breeze that caught Hades' and Hecate's manes, gently causing it to twist and tangle however it saw fit. Shrubs were clustered here and there, occasionally one or two sat alone, or at the base of a large cactus. Hades said nothing, instead moving forward and gracefully stepping down the dune, allowing the sand to shift and move him to the bottom quicker. Once he reached the bottom, he immediately waded into the clear, blue waters, shivering in delight and drinking deeply to satiate his thirst. His twin, however, had a tougher time descending, and very nearly went head over heels or on her side one more than one occasion. Hecate was panting when she reached the edge of the oasis, and solidly ignoring her brother, she dove into the water and rolled in the water to cool off before she drank heavily.
"Hey idiot." Hades snarled out sharply, lunging for his sister, teeth bared. The painted filly scrambled away from him, almost slipping as she gasped for breath, she forced herself not to run and instead submitted to him again, waiting for the pain to come. Hades teeth gripped her crest roughly and he shook her as she yelped, he knocked her off balance and shoved her with his shoulder until she fell to her knees in the oasis. "Are you trying to make yourself sick, Hecate?" He spat out, nose inches from hers. The filly flinched and shook her head immediately, opening her mouth to respond but she was cut off almost immediately. "Well it sure looks that way to me, this was the reason I made you wait, because I knew you would guzzle water." He tsked with a cruel smile. From a distance this scolding would look like an older brother trying to teach his little sister a lesson about something dangerous, but really, it was just another way for Hades to bully, belittle and torment his playtoy. Hecate cowered beneath the taller roan colt, shivering as she attempted to think her way out this situation but coming up blank, the filly felt tears coming to her eyes and she braced herself for the newest round of punishment.
