Shimmering Platinum [Open]

[Talis]

Platinum’s hooves thudded against the ground. The horse looked around in wonder at the burst of greenery in the extremely dull and hot desert. Plants were growing here... How? There was barely any water anywhere else from what she’s observed!

She sniffed at the air. It was, in fact, actual plants. Real plants. How were they growing here?

Dropping her speed to a walk, Platinum entered the oasis. She began weaving through the plants, marvelling at the beauty of it all, especially after growing used to seeing nothing but sand for as far as the eye could see.

Platinum was an explorer, after all. She decided she had to explore this place.

I

t was not often that the pale gray mare would step hoof outside of her territory, but when she did, it was always a treat. Everlasting Serenade was making her way towards the oasis by Death Desert. It had been a while since she last visited the place, and was curious as to its condition now. Would it be the same as years past? She would soon find out.

Her trotting hooves left behind a trail of dust, a path through the desert floor. Was it just her, or had the desert become more forbidding and drier than usual? Perhaps she was just getting thirsty. She slowed her pace to a steady walk, conserving her energy. At the sight of those palm trees, however, they quickened once more. As she entered the little paradise, she let out a sigh of relief. The shade was cool, and the water looked inviting. She was about to dip her head down for a drink when she noticed a movemenet out of the corner of her eye.

Apparently she was not the only one in this place. Not that she minded. It was always a pleasant thing to meet someone new. Unless, of course, the said individual had a dark-minded personality. "Hello there," she called out softly, not wanting to startle the stranger.

Smelling water in the distance, Platinum began to trot closer, blinking curiously. Water? There was water? In the middle of a desert? How?

Just as she approached where the water’s smell came from, there was a call. The call sent Platinum rearing in surprise. She really had to stop with such large actions...It always startled any study subjects.

She turned her head, ears flicking back and forth, and broke into a grin. Maybe she could learn more from this mysterious horse! After all, they seemed pretty nice.

“Hey there! My name’s Platinum!” Platinum approached the other mare. “Do you know how these plants are growing here? May I know?”

he stranger had been startled despite her soft and gentle calling. Oh well, at least it did not attack her. For that, she could be grateful for. Though the Arab was slightly on the older side, it did not mean she could not do her part in a fight. She did not prefer wasting her energy if it was not some dire circumstances, nonetheless.

But at least the mare had seemed friendly enough, calling back when she said hello. "Nice to meet you, Platinum." She dipped her head slightly, acknowledging the other's presence. "I'm Everlasting Serenade, though Seren would work just as well." She returned the smile with one of her own.

As for the other's question, she nodded as she answered. "This oasis," here she would use her head to point towards the water source. "Look closely, there is actually water here. The mirages in this desert can be quite deceiving." The first time she was here, it was almost an accident of sorts. She had been ploughing through the sands when she suddenly noticed tuffs of green on the ground. Then she had looked up, and the mirage had shimmered away to reveal this paradise.

The light gray femme tilted her head to the side, wondering where this adventurer had come from. "What brings you here to these parts?" She asked politely, then awaited to hear the other mare's response. Whether the latter chose to respond or not was up to her.

Did they want to torture her when she had to introduce herself later? Platinum noted to herself, amused. When Everlasting Serenade told her that the oasis wasn't an illusion, Platinum considered telling her that she had already figured that out. Then again, it might be a bit rude to yell that. So she opted not to say it. Instead, she nodded along. Really, what had lead Platinum here was literally the smell of water, so she would remark that she definitely knew the water was no mirage. From what she knew, mirages couldn't fool the sense of smell...Or could it? Huh... Everlasting Serenade then began to ask a question about why she was here. "Well, I'm just here to explore." Platinum responded with a flick of her tail. That was, in fact, her reason.

ale tassels swished softly as the older mare studied the younger one. She seemed to have a sprightly spirit and was friendly enough. Not that it mattered too much to her. Younglings always had their own unique qualms and qualities about themselves. It was something to be cherished, while still in their youth.

"Exploration? A worthy investment of your time." There was a hidden implication to her words, but it would slip away in its subtle reference. "Has this place satisfied that wandering spirit for today?" The question was more rhetorical than an actual question, but she would accept any responses if the other chose to do so.

Serenade dipped her head down until her muzzle was partially emerged in the desert spring. The surface was calm, fed by an unseen water source. On some days, she would walk in and cool herself in the refreshing water. However, she had company today, and it would be unsightly to go for a swim while another watched on.

"Eh, I'm hoping to look around a bit more...Haven't gotten the chance to explore much yet." Platinum explained in response to Everlasting Serenade's question. She had, in fact, not yet gotten the chance to look around better yet. She had been instantly attracted by the smell of water once she stepped foot in the oasis, and as such hadn't looked around much. Stretching her leg, Platinum approached the water. She sniffed at the water again and, as Everlasting Serenade took a sip, dipped her head to the water to drink as well. Her parched throat from travelling through the desert was instantly soothed. "Is swimming here any different from water anywhere else?" Platinum asked Everlasting Serenade suddenly. Flicking her ears, she stepped into the water tentatively before leaping in with a loud splash. Platinum loved swimming just like a fish.

ars languished in relaxation as Serenade, or Seren, took her fill of water. It was such a refreshing thing, soothing water to her parched throat in the heat of the day. In the middle of the desert, no less. She gazed longingly at the oasis. The clearness and stillness of the pool beckoned her, beckoned her to step in and immerse herself in its coolness.

Her head swung towards the direction of the other mare, who was suddenly asking her a question. "No, but it certainly is more enjoyable." She had barely gotten the words out before she heard a splash in the water. If equines had eyebrows, hers would have flown off her head.

Without another moment of hesitation, she gave in. The Arab stepped forward and into the welcoming embrace of the desert spring. It was a slow and elegant entrance, and her eyes were half-closed as she savored in its calming properties.

"Having fun over there?" She called out. Gone were her days of youth, when she would have also jumped in and started swimming just like the young mare. Now, she was just content in slowly walking around in the shallower areas. However, a smile had appeared on her maw as she observed the other's obvious enjoyment at swimming.

She absolutely loved swimming. She glanced back and saw Everlasting Serenade wasn't coming in. Wait, no-never mind. She was in the water, but doesn't seem to be swimming. Why? Oh, right. Age. Platinum leaned into the water, dipping her head into it. The cool waters rushed over her face as she swam. She quickly jerked her head out. Hmm, the water here wasn't that different from normal water after all...The only difference is the scarcity of it. And, well, how it seemed to come from nowhere... ...Speaking of, where did it come from? Platinum paused in her swimming to look around cautiously, searching for the water's source.

he cool waters did much too soothe and refresh the older mare. If she was just a few years younger, she would have definitely joined in on the swimming. Why, back in her day, she was one of the fastest swimmers in her group of friends. But that was in her younger days, back when she was sprightly and had energy to burn. Not that she did not have energy now, but she had learned that it was not an endless supply, and as age slips in, conservation was necessary.

"Be careful over there," she called out a warning. "I believe there is an underground spring somewhere around here, but we don't know where. Unless you can find it?" Speaking of which, she herself had tried looking for the source before, but she never did find it.

This piqued her curiousity, and she herself swam in deeper, eyes roving around the surface. Then it hit her. She was looking for ripples on the water, but it was the wrong place to look. It must have come somewhere underground, since the oasis was not connected to anything. She knew there were certain areas in the pool where her legs could not hit bottom, and she would have to paddle in order to stay afloat. If only they could find that hidden water current, that would probably provide the answer.

Serenade kept a watchful eye on Platinum, watching out in case something went wrong. It was unlikely, but she would be careful nonetheless. Perhaps this young mare could find what she had failed to discover.

She kicked out with her hooves again, fighting her way deeper in, and ducked her head under the water. Platinum squinted, holding her breath. The water was shockingly clear, allowing her to see everything around her in high definition. She held her breath for as long as possible without spotting anything, then pulled her head out to take a deep breath. Suddenly, she realised something. She was focusing too much on sight, while all that time a cool stream had been sweeping by her legs. With a small gasp, she ducked her head back under the water to investigate. There was a current there. Not too strong, so Platinum was probably quite far from it. Frowning, the mare paddled closer, against the current. "I think I'm finding something!" She called to Everlasting Serenade.

erenade watched on calmly, yet curiously as the other mare swam around and even dived underwater. Perhaps they would be able to make a discovery today. It would certainly satisfy and put to rest her youthful search for the source.

As the mare resurfaced from the dive, she noted with a smile that she herself used to do that. Back in those days, when she had energy to spare. Kicking her legs, the light grey dame swam closer to her new companion. "Any luck?" She called out. However, it seemed like the young female had found or realized something. "What did you find?"

Underneath her feet, she could feel a slight current. Ah, of course. A smile grew on her face. "I think it's up further ahead." She noted, then continued her leisurely swim towards the general area of the source, or at least where she assumed it was located.

Besides, Everlasting Serenade also seemed to be curious about this place. Everlasting Serenade swam closer and suggested the spring could be up further ahead. Platinum's attention was now fully on the current. Feeling for the current with her legs, Platinum kicked off, swimming against the current strongly. A pair of brown eyes glinted in excitement. She was finding something! Ducking her head under the water again, Platinum looked around quickly. She seemed to spot something in the distance. Something under the water... "Something's over here!" She called to Everlasting Serenade, head poking out of the water again, before swimming towards the something again. Her eyes squinted, trying to see what it was. It looked alike to an underground cave, and the current was definitely coming from there.

An occasional splash here and there.

Everlasting Serenade flicked her ears towards the younger mare, impressed with the other's ability to pick up on the smallest water movement. She would be looking forward in what she would become - she was sure it would be in something noteworthy. "You found it?"

Interest lighted up her amber eyes, and she swam over quickly. Yes, it seemed like the current was strongest here. From the surface, she could see it was slightly murky compared to the rest of the spring. "What do you say we take a look?"

For a moment, she looked almost young as her eyes twinkled and she dived underwater. It has been a while since she last had any adventure - even the simplest things like this felt fresh and new to her. She glanced around, seeing the underground cave that Platinum had seen earlier.

If the younger mare was also down underwater, she would use her nose to point to the cave, silently asking if she wanted to venture in. If she nodded, Serenade would continue swimming closer to get a closer look. If not, she would go back up to the surface for a breath.

Had she discovered something that Everlasting Serenade hadn't been able to discover? When Everlasting Serenade suggested they take a look, Platinum's eyes lit up as well, mirroring those of the older mare. "Yes!" She exclaimed, and followed Everlasting Serenade. Taking a deep breath, she dove underwater after Everlasting Serenade. She saw the older mare point her nose at the cave in a silent invitation and nodded fiercely, ready as she'll ever be to explore the mysterious cave. What could be in there? Following Everlasting Serenade, Platinum swam closer to the cave, eyes wide in hopes of seeing what was happening.
