Trotting at a gentle pace the mare hummed softly to herself as she walked. Her mind wandered as she thought about her past, her children and her past life and how she missed it. It might have been something that had been forced upon her, but it wasn’t a bad life. She had a mate that protected her, children, friends and basically all a mare could ask for. Well besides freedom to choose who she had taken as a mate, but he had been a good stallion. Someone who respected her judgement and honestly cared about her happiness. At first she had been upset that her brother had simply given her away to his new ally, but as she grew older she got it. He wanted her to be happy and find someone to keep the family line going. She hadn’t been getting any younger and everyone that had been in the herd with them was family. Her brother had taken the first chance he came across to give Carrot a chance to build a life with someone not of their blood and she was thankful for that. Even now years later after both her brother and her mate had passed on from this world. This cold cruel world who didn’t much seem to like her that much. Sure she had met some polite mares and stallions but everyone seemed to grow bored with her and leave. Then there were the stallions who hated her for daring to be twice their age and tried to kill her but the three mares she had been traveling with at the moment who she had become an adopted mother had saved her by giving themselves up for her safety and pushed her away.
Knowing that those three wonderful ladies had chosen to give up their freedom for her touched her heart, but at the same time made her rather sad. A frown was upon her face as she trotted thinking about them. ”Dear great spirits please watch after them and keep them safe.” She prayed softly as she came to a stop near a stream. She had wandered the meadow it ran through without giving much thought about anything or anyone around her until that moment as she had said her prayer with her eyes closed. After she finished she kept them closed and just felt the breeze blow through her flaxen mane. The wind played with it making it rub against her nose and the wound on it. The bite mark was a couple weeks old, but it was clearly not fully healed and as her mane rubbed it, it started to burn. Shaking her head she moved her hair away from her face before lowering her eyes to drive the cool water from the stream. Her eyes never opened the whole time, but instead she listened closely to the world around her and thought she heard someone walking closer so she spoke. ”Hello young one.” She cooed politely in a gentle tone. At her age she just assumed everyone she came across was a young one. Rather this newcomer was or not was yet to be seen. The day was slowly coming to an end as the sun would start to set soon in the sky so sooner or later she would have to open her eyes and give her attention to this new soul before moving on. For now she was content.
