Huntress
The journey had been fraught with danger, she was exhausted and battered as she stumbled between the willows that were lit eerily by the setting moon. Huntress exhaled shakily and leaned against a nearby willow for support as she gained her bearings and took in her surroundings, she was greeted by the gentle sounds of a rushing river alongside the quiet rustle as the willow leaves were disturbed by a soft breeze. A sense of calm and belonging enveloped her being and for the first time in over a year, Huntress felt at peace. She couldn't sense anyone else here for the moment and allowed herself to finally relax, she felt dead on her hooves. Her journey had not been an easy one and she carried scratches and bruises along her sides and legs from a interaction involving a bear and some thorn bushes.
Slowly, she moved through the willows, accepting the branches soft caress as she ducked beneath them. The river's edge was soft grass that provided a cushion to her sore hooves and the water was cool as it soothed her aching throat. Huntress drank deeply from the river before wading in to shoulder height and allowed the river to wash away the dirt, sweat and grime from her travels. Once she felt clean enough, she stepped out onto the opposite bank. Once more, she surveyed her surroundings, the birds were beginning to sing their morning greetings and other animals were starting their days. She closed her eyes and raised her nose to the sky, breathing in deeply the fresh, new air and allowed it to fill her with the hope of a new life and a new start. The dunalino mustang shifted uncomfortably as her hooves began to ache once more, reminding her that she needed to rest and recover before she moved on to explore more. So she turned away from the river's edge and lay beneath a large willow, shaded from the sun as it began to rise high overhead, the day beginning anew.

The willows in this new land was a welcomed changed from the emptiness of land that had stretched out ahead of her for sometime. It had been like the emptiness in her heart for the older mare had grown rather lonely in her travels over the past two years. Every now and then she would find another group and travel with them for a while until they'd grow tired of her and leave. For a while she traveled with three young mares who she took in as their adoptive grandmother, but her time with them also drew to a close as a couple of stallions had came a long and claimed them. They hadn't liked the fact that Carrot was twice their age so they had tried to kill her, but the mares she had adopted protected her and a deal was made. They'd stay with them and Carrot got to live as long as she left. It had broke her heart to do, but she had left them as the mares requested. Susie, Rosemary, Apple I do hope you three are doing well and are safe.' She thought thinking about them as she rounded a tree. Taking a deep breath she let it out in a sigh. Doing so made her nose hurt because on her nose she had a wound that was still healing from that encounter. The wound was from teeth as one of those stallions had been a brute and bite her nose like he was some sort of rabid wolf. The nerve of him so rude. Though as she took in her deep breath a new scent came to her and she looked around. Under a willow there was a resting mare and Carrot couldn't help but think about how she looked like she had, had some pretty rough days. Nodding her head gently towards her she spoke softly and in a gentle motherly like tone. "Hello dearie. I am sorry if I woke you please go back to sleep. I'll keep watch for you." With that she went quiet as she took in the sounds around them before moving to the edge of the water to slowly drink and also to clean the flesh on her nose. WORDS: 373 TAGS: Harlequin

Huntress
Sleep had come quickly to her, though she fought to keep herself falling into a state where she was vulerable to anyone so she flitted between sleep and the waking world. The sound of soft hoofsteps alerted her to another's prescence, however she was slow to react and before she had really woken up, a gentle voice greeted her, soothing her panic as she realised it was a mare, and not a stallion. Huntress exhaled slowly as she took in this mare, and with a quiet groan she got to her hooves and joined her at the water's edge with a good amount of space between them. She was parched again, she hadn't realised quite how dehydrated she had gotten as she drank deeply from the cool water. "Thanks for the offer of keeping watch, but I'll be okay for now." She responded smoothly, disinterestedly looking the mare over. She paused as she saw the bite on her nose and frowned a little,"That looks sore," She mumured, and then before she could stop herself, "Are you okay?"
The dunalino frowned at herself, why on earth was she trying to make conversation with this stranger? She was just fine on her own, she didn't need anyone! Tossing her head a little she turned her head away from the mare slightly, glancing around at the willows that sheltered them from the morning sun. She wondered where she should go from here, and suddenly felt overwhelmed with the prospects of her future. She didn't know anyone, she didn't know the land and, if she was honest, she didn't even know how to get back home if it all went wrong.

Being in such a state were one was forced to refuse real sleep was a state that Carrot herself knew and had worried the girl was playing with. Sleep is need to live. It is needed to think and really care for ones self. When the young mare woke up and came to the water’s edge to drink she felt her heart ache. Not because her watch had been rejected but because it seemed to her that the girl had honestly needed more of it. Perhaps it was just Carrot who needed sleep then? She hadn’t had a good rest in a while and this land, these willows seemed like they would make wonderful shelter. They protected well enough from the sun. ”Well child if you feel you need more don’t fret just rest once more.” She said calmly as she closed her eyes and drunk some more water. It’s coolness coated her throat and felt amazing. Lifting he head from the water she looked have at the other girl. Brown eyes slowly opened and she gave a smile. ”It isn’t the worse I have ever gotten. Sometimes with youth stallions forget what manners are.” She explained her mind smile fading to a small frown for a moment before returning. ”Thank you for asking though it warms my old heart that some still care. I am Carrot. Who might you be dear?” She asked gently before looking her over. Seeing her skin she pouted a moment. Lips paused before pressing together in distaste. ”What of you? You look like you have had some rough days.” Words left her lips with gentle tenderness for she didn’t want to push her into talking about it or anything if the youngling didn’t wish too. Huntress
At the red mare's words, Huntress felt bewildered, why was this complete stranger offering to watch out for her as though they were family? At the thought of family her heart ached, gods she missed them, almost as much as she missed the naiviety she used to have, the state of never having to worry or be alert 24/7. She exhaled quietly, and nodded a agreement at Carrot's words about stallions, "They can certainly be handfuls." She tilted her head slightly and looked the mare over again, seeing no harm to indulging in revealing more about herself. "Well it's nice to make your acquaintance, Carrot. I'm Huntress..." She paused, fighting the urge to divulge her life story to this mare she had just met. She nodded a little in agreement that she'd had a tough time of it and turned to glance over the stratches along her side.
She laughed a little, though more at her situation than in humour, "You could say that..." She trailed off and exhaled heavily before turning back to meet Carrot's eyes, "It's been a tough few moons, though the past few days have been tougher than most. The scratches are because I had a run in with a bear and some thorn bushes." She shook her head and laughed again, this time at herself, that incident was interesting to say the least, stumbling into a cave to seek shelter from a thunderstorm only to come nose to nose with a bear and then as she was fleeing she stumbled and ended up slipping down a slope into a mass of thorn bushes. At least the thorn bushes were able to deter the bear from having her as a late night snack.
Shaking herself from her reverie, Huntress glanced around the area and decided to take a chance, especially considering this mare had been so kind to her already. "This might sound silly, but do you have any idea where we are? I'm not local to the area and I couldn't be more lost." She flushed a little and averted her eyes, embarrassed by her confession.

A stranger this young lady was, but that was no reason to not help her. After all one doesn’t need to be family or even friends to show kindness to another. She often stood watch over slumbering mares she crossed paths with. Most didn’t mind for it allowed them to sleep better. Though she did notice a fair few of them slept and when woke up ran off. The young truly didn’t have much manners as the polite thing to do in return would be for them to watch Carrot’s back as she got a little bit of sleep. Ah well that was of no matter. Sure the red mare could use some sleep, but she’d also just wanted to chat for a bit with this new girl. “It is nice to met you Huntress.” She said calmly as she looked over at her with a smile. Her ears twitched on her head as she listened to the world around them. “You know it is up to us ladies to keep them in line though.”[/b] She said with a wink and a chuckle trying to lighten the mood some. She then grew silent and still as she looked at the girl paying attention to her plight against a bear. “Oh dearie I am sorry you had a run in with a bear. Thank the Great Spirits you went hurt too bad.” She fussed as she started to look her over more closely. “No gapping wounds or missing limbs. Four legs, check. You head. Check.” She wasn’t at all kidding while going through her list. As she looked over the mare she stepped a little closer to get a better look. Her heart was racing as she scanned the girl for major injuries. Seeing that her life wasn’t soon to leave this earth Carrot calmed down some. Ears perked on her head and her heart broke once more hearing that she was lost. Looking at the ground she shook her head. ”No, sorry dear I have just arrived in this land. It’s name or wear we are, are unknown for me as well.” her voice was still a little frazzled and scared from before, but this time he was calmer. More smooth and tender with a hint of sadness that it wasn’t home. WORDS: 382 TAG: Harlequin

Huntress The dunalino mare smiled a little at Carrot's words, indeed, it often fell to the mares to teach some stallions lessons in how to be a gentleman. She could remember her mother and aunt being two of the highest ranking mares in the herd, and for good reason. They could, and would, kick some sense into anyone who thought causing trouble was a good idea. Huntress felt her face flush deeply as this mare fawned over her after she was told of Huntress' run in with the bear, it had been a long time since someone had shown her this much care and concern. She smiled slightly and shifted into a more comfortable position, "I'm perfectly fine, Carrot, just a few bumps and scratches mostly from the thorn bushes, if I'm honest!" She soothed the other mare, "You need not worry too much for me, I've definitely had worse from adventures when I was a yearling." She added, in an attempt to lighten the mood.
It was strange, this mare who she had known for mere minutes was quickly worming her way through Huntress' defenses and into her heart. The young mare found herself concerned for the elder mare that stood in front of her as she too confessed being unsure as to where she was. Huntress allowed silence to fall for a brief moment after Carrot spoke, musing over her words carefully before she replied. "Well, I suppose if we're both lost, at least we're lost together. This place seems safe enough, certainly no trace of bears..." She added the last part as a joke, a small smile coming to her lips once more. "Have you come across anyone else yet? Or am I the first you've met that hasn't bitten you?" She asked quietly, glancing down at the mare's bitten nose before taking another sip of water. Finally feeling as though her thirst was quenched, her stomach rumbled lightly and she took a quick bite of some grass at the water's edge, thankfully her short nap had rejuvinated her enough that she could at least hold a conversation and not feel completely brainless.

The world would have ended long ago if mares hadn’t stepped in and smacked some sense into stallions. Though not smacked like slapped across the nose or anything, but a good tongue lashing was in order every now and again. After all behind every good stallion was a mare there to be the voice of reason. Being a lady didn’t mean simply stand there and look pretty as the gentleman in one’s life became a ruthless brute who ran around unchecked. No. No being a good lady meant being the voice of reason in dark times. It meant being the even head in an argument. Perhaps it had just been how she ran the herd alongside her mate all those years, but Carrot knew a thing or two of being the polite peacekeeper and the feisty vixen at the same time.
Hearing that Huntress was alright she let out a sigh of relief for the girl. ”Oh dear me. Please forgive this old lady years of caring for a family and others in general tend to kick in from time to time.” She explained kindly as a warm smile spread across her face. Eyes raising to look around them at the lovely area they find themselves nestled within. As far as lands go this one by face has been one of the better ones she had come across. In a way it reminded her of home. Though it had been more of a pine forest on the edge of a meadow filled with purple lavenders so perhaps not so much as home had been. She did feel safe here. Even with a stranger she felt safe. There was just something about this young mare that made her feel comfortable.
”Lost together is better than being lonely where one calls home.” She cooed as she returned her gaze back to the girl. ”I suppose though we can’t really call ourselves lost if we don’t have a plan we are headed. I for one am in no hurry to be found either. Life is a journey why not enjoy where the road leads. I am sure I will find where the Great Spirits are leading me sooner or later.” Nodding her head to her own words she shifted her weight as she moved away from the water and over to the tree. Scratching her shoulder against it lazily she made herself comfortable. ”You my dear are indeed the first one I have met in this new place, but it is all good.” Carrot said with a light chuckle.

Huntress
The dunalino smiled gently, "It's quite alright, one of my aunts was much the same..." She paused, throat going tight as she thought of her family, and then she burned with anger at the betrayal and manipulation she was put through. "In my old herd, we were all raised to be independent and fierce, but we knew we could rely on family when it came to it." She mused, thinking of her sisters and cousins, and how they were quite often the ringleaders for trouble and mischief. Another pang of loneliness hit her and she closed her eyes as it roiled through her.
"That is very true, sometimes there is nothing worse than being surrounded by friends and family but feeling more lonely than ever." Huntress replied, Carrot's words had helped bring back perspective and remind her why she had left in the first place. She felt her inner turmoil soothe a little and managed a small smile at the older chestnut mare. "I suppose you're right, you can't really be lost if you have no heading..." Huntress repeated Carrot's words as they could bring her comfort. Quite frankly the young mare was scared, this was the first time she had been away from her family and her homelands. The dunalino glanced up, honey brown eyes meeting dark brown and she nodded a little, "Same here, you're the first I've met since leaving the forest." She replied quietly, and then continued, asking the question that had been plaguing her a bit, "So, um, what are you looking for? Or do you just enjoy travelling?" She paused, and then before she could stop herself "I'm not so sure I like travelling to be honest, my hooves ache, mud gets everywhere and don't even get me started on the lack of sleep." As though to prove her point, Huntress yawned wide, eyes fluttering and she shook herself a little to try and stay awake. The hours of travelling were beginning to really catch up with her now.

For years Carrot hadn’t been with family other than her mate and children or so she had told herself when she was younger. As she aged she understood more and more about life and the fact that family isn’t just blood. The other mares in the herd were her sisters even if they didn’t share the same bloodline. True their children sometimes had the same father as her own, but to her personally they had no relation. Still the bond grew and she loved each of them like her own blood. Even the stallions that called the herd home were like her brothers. The older ones became like her aunts and uncles and her mate’s mother like her own. Just like when the mare passed and Carrot herself had taken up the title as lead mare next to her brother’s ally. Some had been jealous that Carrot was declared lead mare, but it had been best for the herd to strengthen alliances with her birth herd.
Focusing on the girl she listened with a gentle smile and couldn’t help but allow a small chuckle to leave her. ”The lack of sleep can get a bit depressing yes, but you are free to nap. I said before I’d watch over you and I shall.” She said tenderly in a hushed gentle voice. ”As for what I am looking for. Well I am looking for a place to settle down once more. I am not getting any younger and I know the family and life I once had is over with, but I’d like to make new friends, new family to start a new life to live the rest of my days.” Sighing she leaned her head against the tree and watched Huntress for a few moments. ”I don’t mind traveling though. I enjoy meeting others to tell stories to. Speaking of, would you like to hear a story dearie?” She cooed becoming a bit excited about possibly telling her one of her stories. As she waited for a reply from the young mare she rolled through the ones she knew in her head trying to decide which one to tell.

Huntress
The dunalino flushed a little as she remembered her slightly abrupt reply to Carrot's offer earlier and ducked her head a little as she could almost feel her mother admonish her for being rude. She listened to the red mare and nodded a little, "I suppose I'm on the other end, I have my whole life ahead of me and I've no idea what I'm going to do..." She trailed off a little, distracted by her own thoughts once more before refocusing on Carrot at her offer of a story. Her ears flicked back a little and she very nearly snapped out that she wasn't a yearling or a foal that needed a bedtime story, but something stopped her.
She felt her whole body beginning to tire of being upright for so long after such a short rest and at the older mare's excitement of possibly telling a story, Huntress felt her soul lift a little. Surely it wouldn't do any harm to allow herself to rest for a bit and listen to a story, it would be a nice change from the monotony of the last few months of travelling alone. Hesitantly, she spoke, "That sounds lovely, Carrot, I think I'm just going to lie down for a bit though, hopefully I don't doze off." Huntress carefully picked her way through the lush grass to the other side of the willow that Carrot was leant against and settled heavily into the grass. Legs folded comfortably beneath her, much like a newborn foal, the dunalino refocused on the red mare again, ears tilted toward her as she exhaled quietly and allowed herself to relax a little for the first time since she had left her herd.

Carrot couldn’t help but allow her smile to spread even wider as the young one spoke about having her whole life ahead of her. ”Hey now don’t count this old lady out just yet I still have plenty of feistiness left in me.” She said with a chuckle. She was older, yes but she still could have many years left in life. Then again she could go to sleep and not wake up. Life was never promised after all. Watching the girl’s ears she held back another chuckle as she wondered if she was trying to decide if she wanted that story or not. Honestly in Carrot’s mind you were never too old for a bedtime story and was thankful as she agreed to listen to her. Shifting next to the tree she got comfortable herself and gave some room for Huntress. Watching and waiting for the girl to get comfortable Carrot looked away and up at the sky. Watching the leaves of the willow blow gently in the wind she couldn’t help but find this land peaceful. ”Well lets see. What story shall it be? There are so many good ones.” She said softly as she rolled over all her stories in her head. Finally she decided on one which made her smile. Nodding her head softly to herself. ”Please tell me if you have heard this one before or not, but there is a tell my mother used to tell me as I was growing up.” She cooed while returning her gaze to the young mare. ”It is about the Great Spirits.” Pausing for a moment she closed her eyes and she could see her mother’s warm chocolate and hear her soft voice ring in her head for a moment as she thought about her which made her smile. ”Once upon a starlit night many thousands of full moons ago there was a herd that lived in a barren land. This land had very little food and even less water. Worse yet it was controlled by wolves who only allowed the herd to live there under their protection from other wild beasts if they gave up half of the foals born there.” Speaking she shook her head sadly at the words of giving up foal to these monsters. Her voice gentle and tenderly turned into a whisper. ”This was known as the time of great sorrow, and was so until this night when from the heavens a star shot across the sky. Seeing this star the herd’s only pregnant mare wished upon it for a better life free of hungry and wolves. She sent a heart filled plea to the heavens for she knew come the birth of her child it would be snatched away for even though her child would be the only one born the wolves that protected them were greedy. They would rather the herd go without foals then for themselves to go without food for their pups.” Pausing Carrot grew silent as if this story was something more than just a story to her. After a few moments of staring at the ground with a sad look in her eyes she looked back up and gave Huntress a small smile. ”Watching this star shoot across the sky it is said this lone mare saw the star shift and fall from the heavens as if it had heard her cries. The star crashed upon the barren land just off in the shadowy borders where the waterfall that once roared over the cliffs and into the land had been. Seeing this the mare told the other members of the herd and curiously they went to go see where it landed and what it looked like for no star had ever fallen so close before.” Taking a deep breath Carrot allowed another pause for a very short time as she looked from Huntress up towards the heavens before her eyes landed upon the water near them. ”And you know what they found when they arrived?” She paused again and eyed the girl to see if she was still awake and wondered if she would try to answer her question before going on. ”Wolves. They too had been curiously and seeing the horses in their part of the land enraged the alpha who ordered them dead. That was when they appeared from out of the very spot the star had landed. Made of shimmering starlight, and said to be made of the stars themselves two beings one horse and one wolf. Seeing this made the wolves stop in their tracks as the great wolf stood in front of the herd, which made the alpha very angry he charged at the pregnant mare in a rage aiming to steal her life from her very being when the great wolf let out a mighty howl that called forth the river. Water rushed over the falls and across the land sweeping away the angry wolf with it. That wolf was never seen again. After that it is said the great wolf ran off with the wolf pack.” This made her smile as a dreamy look came to her eyes. ”As for the horse made of stars? Well it is said with a mighty whiney and a stomp of his hooves the land turned green and life flourished in the land. Life was good until the mare gave birth to her foal and he was born astill. Seeing the pain of the mare the great stallion stood upon the body of the colt and promised that he would be forever looking over all before bursting into stardust that settled upon the body turning his pure white coat spotty with small black spots, and bringing life into him. Every now and then it is said that when life is really hard if you wish upon a shooting star the Great Spirits will hear it and send a little hope your way.” With that she let out a gentle sigh as her story was now finished. Huntress
The dunalino mustang was enthralled by Carrot's story, the way the chestnut mare wove an entire world with just her words and inflections fascinated Huntress. She tilted her head and rested it against the tree trunk as she listened to the story intently, remaining silent throughout the entire tale. At Carrot's question she shook her head, "What did they find?" The curiousity dripped from every word as she eagerly awaited the next part of the story. The young mare couldn't withold a smile at the conclusion and she piped up "That was a lovely tale, Carrot. I've never heard that one before, the ending in particular was lovely, I do like a happy ending." She exhaled quietly and continued, "My herd never was one for much story-telling. They preferred to recount adventures and embellish our herd's history." Huntress rolled her eyes a little, she had been forever hearing about her father and uncle's adventures as bachelors, or the battles her grandfather had fought and so on and so forth. She supposed it gave the young colts and stallions something to live up to, though it did encourage them to be daredevils and often got them into more trouble than fame.
She snorted a little in amusement as she remembered a moment from her childhood and glanced up at the elder mare, deciding to share her own story. "My herd generally were regaled by stories from my father and uncles youths, which occupied us all however it gave some of the braver colts ideas. There was one particular occasion where my brother took it upon himself to gather his usual band of misfit friends and take them on an adventure." She paused, a melancholy smile as she felt an ache in her chest, she missed them dearly. "We were yearlings at the time, I knew of his plans but didn't want any part of it, it was too dangerous. He and three other colts ventured outside of the herdlands into the swamps to the east, they were looking to retrive some flowers that only grew right at the very center, much like my father and uncle had done when they were young stallions, looking to woo some mares. My brother, ever the idiot, suggested they take the quicker, more dangerous path to get to the plant. The others tentatively agreed and followed him up until the point that they had to cross a fallen tree to reach a small island that was surrounded by a deep marsh that swallowed anything that fell into it. As my brother crossed first, the other colts too cowardly, the tree began to creak, and just as he reached the other side it felt apart and was swallowed by murky swamp. My brother was now stranded on the island. Of course, this spooked the other colts and they began to run home for help. Thankfully, as they retraced their steps back to the herdlands, my father had cottoned onto my brother's plans and had tracked them. He reached my brother and felled a tree with one swift kick and together they journeyed back home. My brother was kept under close watch after that, to make sure he didn't get himself or anyone else into trouble." Huntress exhaled a quiet laugh and shook her head, "He always was a rebel. Brave but stupid."
The usually quiet mustang had barely talked to anyone since leaving her herd, and even before then she didn't speak much, so it was unusual for her to share a story from her past. In fact, as she thought about it, this was possibly one of the first horses outside of their herd to know that story and she smiled a little. Her brother would live on in stories and memories, just as he would in their herd's history, forever being embellished into a hero for young foals and yearlings to look up to, just as their father, uncle, grandfather and all the others were.
